About Destinica

At Syngenta we are excited to introduce a series of new and improved varieties of cauliflower to you. A series with more variation in growing cycles in order to meet the specific requirements for your market. Our aim is to offer the highest level of reliability and consistency in cauliflower curd quality for the fresh market. The first variety we will introduce to you is called Andromeda.

Why Destinica

Destinica is a totally new concept of Cauliflower varieties that we will introduce to the marketplace during the coming years. With the introduction of this innovative variety of cauliflower heads with long lasting white colour, we enhance our existing portfolio. The curd colour stays white even after harvest and after being exposed to the sun light.

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES FOR THE GROWER?

  • Consistently white; The biggest advantage is that the highly attractive pure white colour of the cauliflower remains the same even after harvest.
  • Costs & labour reduction; Another unique benefit is that there is no need to cover the curds manually before harvest in the production field. This gives you the advantage of substantial savings on your labour and production costs, particularly when large curd sizes are harvested.

For one hectare of cauliflower production (6 curds / box) with standard varieties, there are 90-100 hours of manual labour required. We anticipate a reduction of 50% in labour requirements and substantial cost reduction with the introduction of the outstanding first variety Andromeda.

Growing Advice for Andromeda

  • Andromeda will harvest the greatest yields if grown in late spring though to early autumn.
  • Sowing from the beginning of March will elicit the best results for your crop.
  • Andromeda has a short growing cycle. For The Netherlands in summer it’s 65 days, and in early autumn 70 days for large curds (6 curds/ box). For midi and mini curds the average growing cycle is approximately 10 days less.
  • To be used only in production fields with fertile soils and avoid stress during the plant development period.
  • Estimated advice for nitrogen is dependent on soil level. General crop advice for poor soils is 225 kg/ ha and for rich soils 175 kg/ha.
  • In order to secure the best plant establishment after transplanting, our recommendation is to raise the young plants in trays as opposed to peat pots.
  • Some yellowing of leaves during the plant growing on period can occur in early spring but this will soon disappear.
  • It is possible to delay the plant growing on period for one week, sometimes slightly more.

Future plans for Destinica

In the upcoming years we expect to introduce a series of varieties with more variation in growing cycles and perfection in agronomy. The aim is to offer the fresh market the highest level of reliability and consistency in cauliflower curd quality and to continuously contribute to improving your cauliflower curd quality.
